Smart Nutrition Notes – June 2014
Today, in northern New England it finally feels like summer might come this year! We had a beautiful sunny 80 degree day. The lilacs smell divine and the days are getting longer with only a few weeks to go until the Summer Solstice. If you are wondering how you might create a summer filled with lots of vitality, you might be interested in the thoughts shared this month on cleansing and detoxing your body.
I started to follow this practice about 8 years ago when I was gaining weight, feeling low on energy, and having some challenges with my immune system. Regular cleansing
during the spring and fall seasons has made all the difference!
Wishing you abundance and health.
Warmly,
Ruth
Is it time for a cleanse?
Now that we are finally (at least those of us in the Northeast) into spring, there is hardly a better time than now to support our bodies with a cleanse.
In fact, spring presents a perfect opportunity to cleanse, shed some pounds, and lighten up for summer. To get you in the spirit of the cleansing process, let’s review a few reasons why cleansing makes sense.
1. We live in a sea of toxins.
Toxins are in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. In fact, since the turn of the 20th century more than 80,000 chemicals have been added to our environment, many of which have never been safety tested. Excessive toxins affect your thyroid, your hormones, your sleep, your mood, and your digestion as well as how you look and feel.
2. The human body is a miracle.
Our bodies are equipped with an amazing baseline system of detoxification that is working at every moment to support life. This makes our very existence possible.
Some folks who criticize cleansing base their opinions on this very fact but they are missing a very important part of the story.
The more the toxicity of modern life increases, the more the demands to detoxify have increased.
The real problem is that the body’s ability to detoxify has not kept pace.
3. Our bodies are overwhelmed.
As we become more depleted of vital nutrients and our bodies are overpowered by toxins, our systems can no longer function as well and we become toxic.
Many of us are dealing with the effects of this increased toxic burden in many ways.
Common complaints such as headaches, bowel irregularities, moodiness, allergies, sleeplessness, weight problems, depression, anxiety, and pain are largely caused by our overtaxed detox systems. If you are looking a little older, feeling more tired, and losing your vitality it may be the perfect time for you to cleanse.
4. Cleansing is a good seasonal habit.
Spring is one of the best times to cleanse. The weather is warmer encouraging us to get outside. More local plant foods are available including water-rich fruits and vegetables.
Cleansing can be turned into a seasonal habit. Once or twice a year, it is wise to give our body a chance to clean house, restore our energy, and get us back on track to eating clean whole foods.
Here are three ways to cleanse this spring:
1. Do the Clean and Lean program. Check out my website at www.smartnutritionllc.com for further information and details on how to contact me.
2. Eat cleansing foods for the next 10 days. Organic fruits, vegetables, chicken or turkey, wild fish, and gluten free grains are some great choices.
3. Have a daily shake for 7 days. Try a nutrient-dense shake instead of your usual breakfast to give yourself a strong start to the day. This is the easiest choice. Shakes are easy to digest and can be a strong start to the day. Try our recipes for some delicious and nutritious shakes.
I hope you will take this advice and cleanse your body in some way before the dog days of summer arrive! If you do, please drop me a line and let me know how you are doing.
