Keep your ‘Super Bowl’ healthy – Some great ideas

It’s going to be a great game and a good opportunity to get together with friends and family to banish the winter doldrums. You may be focused on improving your eating habits in 2019 and concerned about how to get through the Super Bowl party with your intentions intact.

If you are hosting the party, you have control over the menu which is great. You can serve crudités with a great dip, lots of dishes loaded with veggies and go light on the high fat appetizers and high sugar sweets and desserts. Instead of filling up on greasy nachos and fried foods you can offer lighter choices. Light Chicken Salsa Verde Nachos are a great alternative. I also like to make a Guacamole that is loaded with veggies like plum tomatoes and tomatillos to lighten up the dip. Also making your own chips from yellow or white corn tortillas or whole wheat pita is a snap to do and they taste great. Or you can make a healthier 5 Layer Dip to serve with those homemade chips.

A great main dish is Turkey Chili with Chocolate or White Chicken Chili. Just make a big Hearty Winter Salad with seasonal veggies like Brussels sprouts and kale which you can make ahead because they are hardy greens that get better in a marinade and you are all set.

If you want a dessert, fruit is a great choice. I know, sounds boring doesn’t it? But not if you dip it in some luscious healthy dark chocolate—85% or better. This is easier to do than you might think and some great fruits to try are strawberries, bananas and pineapple. This is a rich nutritious dessert and a little goes a long way!

If you are a guest, it makes sense to bring a dish you know you can eat. You can bring a great salad, or I love to bring a beautiful tray of crudités along with a dairy free dip such as Red Pepper “Cheese” Dip so I know everyone can partake.

    1. Hi Isis, I hope you enjoy them!! I just made the White Chicken Chili on Sunday and we’ll be eating leftovers tonight.

  1. Thank you Ruth! It is always challenging to eat well during these events. I’ve invited friends to watch the game with us so thank you for the ideas and recipes! Mine will be meatless but fun as well!

    1. Hi Anat, Go Patriots! What are you planning to make meatless? You could do the White Chile and add tomatillos or salsa verde. I am always looking for new recipes to share. Thanks for your comment.
